Saturday Night Live: Scarlett Johansson returns to where she 'met the love of my life'

Scarlett Johansson hosted Saturday Night Live for the sixth time in a show that heavily referenced her record-breaking box office success Avengers: Endgame.

The 35-year-old actress started her monologue with what seemed like a holiday-specific skit involving Aidy Bryant as an elf on the shelf.

But the extended opening turned into a reference to her superhero blockbuster and culminated with Scarlett saluting her fiancé -and SNL’s co-head writer- Colin Jost.

After Aidy commended the Marriage Story star for being a ‘very good girl,’ she suddenly disappeared into a puff of dust like half of humanity in Endgame.

‘Oh no, Thanos, from the Avengers movie I was in,’ Scarlett deadpanned.

Half of the cast began to disappear, including Alex Moffat, whom Chris Redd mistook for Mikey Day.

‘It’s the same damn thing,’ he said after being corrected.

After Heidi Gardner worried that Pete Davidson had disappeared, Cecily Strong corrected her: ‘Oh, no, I think it’s just one of those weeks where Pete doesn’t show up.’

Scarlett got some good news when Colin turned out to be safe, though she seemed comically unenthused that he hadn’t disintegrated.

Kenan Thompson emerged, dressed as Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury, to reveal that Pete had gotten control of the Infinity Gauntlet and had disappeared half the cast.

After catching up with him in a back office, Scarlett interrogated Pete as to where everyone disappeared to.

‘Oh, uh, Peacock, NBC’s new streaming service,’ he joked.

The Ghost World actress was able to convince Pete to resurrect everyone, though he said he didn’t know he had to snap the glove to restore order.

‘I didn’t see the movie,’ he admitted in a line that might have been ad libbed because it elicited a genuine-seeming gasp from Scarlett, who wished him a stunned Merry Christmas and gave him a hug before heading back to the main stage.

Pete was left alone with Kenan and let him know he was going to be taking a few shows off to film his semi-autobiographical movie with Judd Apatow.

‘Yeah, when you’ve been here as long as I have you can do that,’ he explained to the 16-year SNL veteran.

The show returned after the break with a sketch inside a mall Santaland.

Alex and Chloe played a pair of enthusiastic elves who ceded the floor to Kenan and Scarlett, who looked out of place with their pink hair and and extra accessories.

Instead of doing traditional Christmas and holiday songs, they sang raunchy hip hop–inflected songs.

‘Macy’s has the festive fashion’s that’ll have them saying “It’s too hot!”‘ read the slogan.

They advertised sales on Merino wool sweaters that ‘won’t fit over his head’ and ‘cozy corduroys’ that would ‘pinch his little nuts.’

Next, Scarlett returned for the aftermath of an overly rowdy office holiday party.

She played the vice-president of sales, who was being fired along with the front desk security guard Charlie (Kenan) for getting too drunk at the party.

She apologized for her behavior, though no one in the office was interested in hearing it.

But when Charlie glibly apologized for sexually harassing people they laughed it off and found him charming.

‘How is that not awful?’ she asked.

Kyle Mooney showed up later in elaborate makeup as a somewhat less cute version of The Mandalorian’s Baby Yoda, who is technically neither a baby nor Yoda.

This Baby Yoda also had a bit of a mean streak.

‘Baby Groot, do me a favor — keep my name out ya little twig mouth before I snap you like a twig!’ he threatened.

After the break, Ego Nwodim and Chris Redd played a couple taking a dip in the hot tub at a Radisson hotel, which was interrupted when two ghosts appeared in the pool, played by Scarlett and Cecily Strong.

‘We’re just two dead strippers who get to haunt this hot tub every Christmas,’ they said with twangy southern accents.

They two launched into a song revealing they died in 1973 after going for a swim on quaaludes.

‘Is it safe to swim on Quaaludes? / There’s only one way to find out,’ they sang.

Musical guest Niall Horan of One Direction fame joined them as the owner of their strip club.

He revealed that he played a game of chicken fight with the women, culminating in everyone drowning while having a staring contest underwater.

Aidy Bryant introduced the next sketch, a spoof of a Christmas-themed Hallmark Channel dating show, A Winter Boyfriend for Holiday Christmas.

Scarlett played the overworked single woman, while Beck played a Christmas tree salesman from her hometown, Alex played a Christmas prince from a vaguely European nation, and Kyle played Nick St. Claus, who was definitely just Santa in disguise.

‘I have to write an article for the paper about how Santa isn’t real. The last thing I’m looking for is a guy,’ Scarlett joked.

‘Whoever you pick will join you in the Hallmark gazebo suite, where you’ll share a single dry kiss,’ Aidy said.

In the end, she didn’t pick any of the guys, and just decided to marry the concept of Christmas.

‘That’s right, the true reason for Christmas is boyfriend,’ said Aidy with a dead-eyed stare.
